Enjoy Better Indoor Air Quality with AirRenew Drywall Panels

AirRenew Drywall

When you have concerns about indoor air quality, there are any number of steps you can take to remedy the situation. But what if you could improve the air quality simply by choosing a different type of drywall panel? The researchers at CertainTeed have developed AirRenew drywall, which actively removes formaldehyde from the air and converts it into a safe, inert compound. Read on to learn more about this revolutionary new drywall product.

With the focus on green construction these days, it seems as though virtually every product has reduced the level of VOCs they contain, including formaldehyde. But reducing isn't the same as eliminating. If you're working on a fast-track project or have a client with chemical sensitivities, that may not be enough to reduce VOCs to safe levels. Formaldehyde is a specific issue for many as it can cause skin, eye, nose and throat irritations, neurological symptoms and asthma or allergy problems. At higher levels, formaldehyde may cause ulcers, liver and kidney damage and even some types of cancers. It's a serious health threat.

CertainTeed AirRenew Drywall

To combat that threat, CertainTeed has developed their line of AirRenew panels. Formaldehyde is released into the air from any number of sources, including manufactured wood products, paint, varnish, carpets and similar materials often found in new construction and renovations. The AirRenew panels have been specifically designed to not only absorb that formaldehyde, but to also convert it into an inert substance. That means your crew won't need to worry about being exposed to concentrated levels of formaldehyde when making renovations on structures that contain AirRenew panels in the future.

But what about specialty applications? CertainTeed's AirRenew panels come in a few formulations currently and may see additional expansion into other areas in the future. AirRenew Essential provides basic 1/2" drywall panels that can be used in any place that regular drywall may be used, while the AirRenew Essential Type X is a 5/8" fire-resistant drywall. AirRenew's M2Tech drywall provides a more mold and moisture resistant drywall for bathrooms, kitchens or other areas that are problematic for moisture, high humidity and mold. M2Tech is also available in a Type X format to meet your fire protection needs.

Carrying AirRenew Drywall

As a ULE-validated product, AirRenew provides these benefits while handling like standard drywall. Cutting and scoring remain the same, and the AirRenew line is compatible with most joint and texturing compounds. For the most part, non-glossy finishes are recommended. However, if you're considering adding a glossy surface to the drywall, remember that you'll want to put a thin layer of joint compound across the surface of the board and work the wall to a Level 5 finish. To maximize formaldehyde absorption, you may want to consider vapor-permeable finish options, as primer and paint may reduce this capability. One option to maximize this process is using a breathable wallpaper to reach this goal.

Indoor air quality can be improved in many ways, but by using AirRenew panels in the construction or renovation phase, you can actually reduce the amount of formaldehyde in the air to begin with.
