One place that is a hidden treasure in many homes is the basement. Often used for storage or accumulation of miscellaneous items, it can be turned into a beautiful area that can be enjoyed by all members of the family. Many people decide to make this transformation as a family project that brings a real sense of accomplishment. Although this may take some time, a great deal of money can be saved by doing this project yourself, it can increase the value of your home substantially if done correctly.

Some things need to be done before actually beginning. These are:

  • Empty the basement. Get rid of junk and things that you will never use.
  • Check the basement walls and floors for any cracks. Make repairs with quick cement if necessary.
  • Clean, clean, clean. Make sure there are no spider webs or dirt on the floors, walls or ceiling.
  • Make a budget and plan regarding changes you want to make.
  • Be sure the basement floor and walls are dry.

Take measurements and purchase materials required to make a change. These will include:

  • Stairs to basement refinished2x4s to frame around the basement wall
  • Drywall to cover the 2 x 4's
  • Insulation

There are many DIY projects listed on the Internet that will guide you step-by-step in the construction process. It is also a good idea to watch some of the renovation television shows. It is important that all materials be purchased prior to beginning the project. This eliminates the necessity of running back and forth to the lumberyard or store.

Refinished basement with pool tableAs a rule, the waterproof covering is laid on the floor and covered by plywood prior to installing the flooring itself. This allows you to put up the 2x4's on the walls and ceiling, followed by drywall. Tile or laminate are excellent floor choices although some people prefer carpet if designing a family room with television, games and so forth. It is also a good idea to set off concealed spaces for the washer/drier and even a toilet. The latter may require the help of a licensed plumber to make the connections.

Converting a basement into an attractive place is a fun project the entire family can enjoy and is not difficult to do.
