Effective & Money Saving Tips for Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning With Windows Open

As the weather finally changes warm air takes on a lighter quality and even the sourest mood begins to lift. Spring is definitely a time for renewal both inside and out. While cleaning feels like a chore during any other time of the year, Springtime suddenly turns even the most professional procrastinator into a vibrant cleaning machine. Spring cleaning also brings out the creativity in some happy homemakers.

Windows and Glass

Spring cleaning does not have to be expensive or time consuming. Some cleaning products can be found around the home rather than purchased. Re-purposing common household agents is not only economical but it is also very good for the environment.

Newspaper makes a great non-streak tool with which to clean windows, mirrors, and other glass surfaces. Ammonia and vinegar can be used in place of expensive brand name window cleaning formulas that may contain harsh chemicals.

Walls and Baseboards

A small amount of baking soda in some warm water creates an effective cleaning formula that safely washes down oil or water based paints on walls and baseboards. This system is also very effective because the baking soda does not produce any suds or soapy residue that requires an extra step to thoroughly rinse the recently cleaned areas.

The same combination of water and baking soda can be used for many other purposes if the water is still fairly clean. An old toothbrush and the existing mixture can be used to scrub difficult areas between the baseboard and the floor as well as the tight spaces between counter tops and appliances.

No Spring cleaning effort would be complete without sprucing up the various flooring throughout the home. Hardwood flooring may require special treatment for deep cleaning or waxing but can be easily swept clean with a standard broom and dustpan or a dust attracting broom that uses static electricity to capture dust particles, hair and pet dander.

Carpeting is easier to work with because it can simply be spot cleaned if only a few high traffic areas need serious work. If the overall carpet is showing signs of wear, dirt, and grime a thorough scrubbing may be in order. This is also a good time to multitask by wiping down wood furniture and even giving upholstered furniture a once over with the carpet scrubbing furniture attachment.
