What is the Forest Stewardship Council?

Beautiful forest

According to a report made by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about half of the world's forests has been either altered, destroyed, degraded, or turned into area for other use. Even the forests that remain today are subject to illegal exploitation and poor management. This is the reason that the FSC was established, to help with these concerns.

What is the Forest Stewardship Council?

DeforestationThe Forest Stewardship Council, the FSC, is an international non-profit organization which was established in 1993 in order to promote responsible managing of the world's forests. To establish this, they use; standard setting, labeling of forest products, and certification. The organization has said that their aim is to "provide businesses and consumers with a tool to influence how forests worldwide are managed."

The FSC has five goals; Create business value of the products that come from FSC certified forests, make advancements in responsible forest management, ensure equal access to the benefits offered by the FSC, ensure that the FSC has credibility, integrity, and transparency, while building a stronger global network to make sure they can deliver on their goals.

The Purpose of the Stewardship Council?

Why the FSC matters.Their mission is to "promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests". The FSC delivers environmental services (such as clean air and water) to local and international communities that need them while also contributing to mitigating the undesirable effects of climate change on the planet and its resources.

The organization directly, although sometimes indirectly, addresses such issues as illegal logging, global warming, deforestation, and illegal exploitation. The organization is a group of international members (about 850 of them) that come together, whether they be forest owners, part of a social group or an environmental organization, or part of a timber industry, to find solutions that will improve the management of forest practices; while seeking permanent existence of forest areas.

How the Stewardship Council Affects the Economy and the Environment:

The FSC has had, and continues to have, a positive effect on the development of the economy, environmental conservation, the alleviation of poverty, and both political and social empowerment. In 2012, it was stated that about 165 million hectares had be certified to date in 80 countries. The FSC continues to play an important role in regulatory landscape of domestic forest and has developed the appropriate domestic governance to reflect their part.
